Many clients contact lawyers after being found on the wrong side of the law, but what clients must know and understand is that a foreigner is not permitted by law to work in Rwanda unless he/she secures a work permit, and to the applicants applying for residence permit, the grace period is fifteen (15) days upon arrival in the country. After that period, penalties will be applied immediately as stipulated by the law. To avoid being on the wrong side of the law, always apply for a permit as soon as possible.
Fortunately, anyone can apply for the work permit at Rwanda Directorate General of immigration and Emigration or at the Rwandan Embassy in the Country he or she is residing.
The following are the basic requirements to secure a work permit in Rwanda:
- Request letter;
- Passport;
- Filled application forms;
- Passport photo;
- Notarized Educations Certificate/s
- Police /Criminal Clearance from the Country he/she has been living for the past six months;
- Employment Contract;
- Proof that the employment position is not under labor teast
- C.V; and
- Proof of payment of the application fees. East African Community citizens do not pay for resident permit
NOTE:
– Documents to be submitted must be translated in French or English e.g Diploma/Degree, Police Clearance, Marriage certificate and Birth Certificate e.t.c
– A work permit holder has the right to change employers during the period of validity of the work permit, but he/she is required to inform the office of the Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration in writing. While renewing the permit, he/she is required to present a resignation letter or termination letter from the previous employer.
– Investors/Entrepreneurs before applying for residence permits, are advised to contact the Field Inspection and Law enforcement department of DGIE, to arrange for a field visit.
– The Directorate General of Immigration and Emigration may request the applicants to submit any other document when deems necessary for more information and clarification.
